What kind of pizza can a diabetic eat?
Thin-based pizzas have fewer calories and carbohydrates than many of the thick pizzas.
Vegetables as ingredients provide fewer calories than meat, although olives are the exception as they have somewhat more fat and calories.
How many servings of pizza can a diabetic eat?
To give you an idea, the Diabetes Federation calculates that half a medium pizza (that is, 200 grams of about 400 grams in total that they usually have) usually means 5 servings of hydrates for our body.
Tips for eating pizza if you have diabetes
Take it forlunch. Being an important source of hydrates, it is more useful for our body to provide energy for the remainder of the day. And we can also better control a rise in sugar during the afternoon than let our body support it while we sleep.
If you use it to save time, cook dinner at noon while the pizza is baked, so at night you will be equally freed from obligations in the kitchen.
Adjust yourinsulin. If after eating a pizza your glucose levels rise, it is not only because it is a food with many hydrates, also because the insulin has not been adjusted accordingly.
Remember that although you have 50% hydrates, only 3% are sugars (we are talking about a precooked dough, complete industrial pizzas usually have more), the rest are slow absorption.
Buy it in the supermarket or, better, cook it athome. Unless your favorite pizzeria offers nutritional information, the best way to know how many hydrates the pizza you’re eating actually has is to make it yourself, or have the information come on its packaging.
Opt for finedough. Whether homemade or purchased, choose those pizzas that have a base with less flour, so as not to abuse the hydrates.
Try otherflours. If you prepare it yourself, choose spelt flour, wholemeal flour, or another flour that provides less hydrates to the recipe.
Compensate the hydrates with the other ingredients. When preparing or choosing, opt for less cheese and sauces, and more ingredients with fiber and other nutrients, so as not to add many more carbohydrates to the total pizza. It also uses homemade tomato, to reduce the contribution of sugars.
Share. Few meals are as appropriate to eat with other people as a pizza. Instead of eating one you alone, share it with more people and add another dish as a complement that does not contain as many hydrates.
And remember: a good pizza has few ingredients, so that they distinguish themselves from each other. With pineapple or without pineapple, with anchovies or without anchovies… that’s up to you!
